The Houston Independent School District (HISD) announced a change to its policy for serving meals to children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2018-2019 school year. All HISD Schools are now qualified to operate the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP); which will allow HISD to provide breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. Although the meal applications are eliminated, a socioeconomic form will be required by the school registrars to collect as a performance indicator for student achievement and for use in the disbursement of federal funds. This new approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.
